Behavior Problems

Nu-Brain believes in families!

Did you know that abnormal behavior, emotional problems, learning disabilities, and other neurological conditions are often genetically linked? Not only are physical characteristics such as Mary’s red hair and Stephen’s tall height passed down through generations, but the mental-emotional components within the genes are as well. Get a family together and you’ll hear things like, “she has a fiery temper just like Grandma Ellen” or “he is a brilliant problem-solver just like his dad.”

Through recent technological advancements in the EEG field of brain mapping, we can now see similar generational characteristics in brain maps of related individuals. Take a look at the following maps. One is of a mother, and the other is of her son:

As you can see, each has similar under-functioning theta waves, and over-functioning beta. Both the mother and the son suffer from Anxiety and an inability to focus.

Children of alcoholics have similar maps to those of the alcoholic parent, showing a genetic predisposition to the problem. Whether or not they act on the predisposition may or may not happen, but the low amplitude of alpha and the high amplitude of beta shows up as a typical pattern in alcoholics.

Also, the same is true for ADD and ADHD in which the parent typically has excess amounts of slow wave theta in their maps, and the child inherits similar patterns of slow waves in theta.

Because of this hereditary link, it is important to explore the common struggles within each family. Ask questions of generational family members as to their histories and symptoms to see if there are similarities. Because there is often more than one individual in a family suffering from a neurological condition, Nu-Brain believes neurofeedback therapy should be readily available to all family members.

In considering the needs of families, Nu-Brain has developed comprehensive and affordable package plans that are structured to accommodate multiple family members. Our plans make it easy for even highly functioning family members to enjoy the benefits of neurofeedback therapy as well, to improve memory, performance, and overall mental sharpness.

Nu-Brain is very concerned with the success of your neurofeedback therapy. In conjunction with a brain map that identifies where the problems reside in the brain, we also explore an individual’s health history to determine whether or not the problems identified in the brain map might be affected by a physiological condition. If there is reason to believe that a physiological issue might be contributing to the neurological problem, we then refer to a qualified physician who is aware of the link between certain physiological and neurological conditions. It is best to treat both issues for the greatest overall success

The following article indicates the importance of early screening for physiological conditions when a person undergoes the mapping of the brain. The following is a quote from an article by Dr. Vincent J. Monastra, of the FPI Attention Disorders Clinic in Endicott, NY, and of the Department of Psychology, Binghamton University in NY. It was published in January 2005 in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinics of North America Journal:

Electroencephalographic Biofeedback (Neurotherapy)

As a Treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity

Disorder: Rational and Empirical Foundation

At our clinic we begin with a semi-structured, standardized clinical interview to obtain relevant medical, psychiatric, developmental, social, and academic background information.

Because symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity can be caused by medical conditions other than ADHD (see list below) we refer all of our patients to their physician for evaluation of these conditions before beginning treatment.  Review of our clinical records from the past 20 years revealed that 335 of our 11,780 patients (3%) were screened and effectively treated for their ADHD symptoms by addressing one of the listed medical conditions. Medical conditions that may cause cortical slowing on an EEG brain map include:

Anemia

Hypoglycemia

Diabetes

Thyroid Disorders

Vitamin B Deficiencies

Mineral Deficiencies of zinc and magnesium

Sleep Apnea

Allergies

Psychoactive Substance Abuse

If you or a family member suffers from any of the above conditions, we recommend a dual approach where your physician treats the physiological aspects that contribute to the problem, while we provide the neurofeedback therapy to “re-wire” the abnormal brain waves.

Our prices are as follows:

Brain Map Prices

Basic Brain Map • $355

This is the basic map and is the one most people choose, unless there is a reason to add a Consultant’s report, or a Neurologist’s report, and if so, we have that available for a little more.

Basic Brain Map plus Neurologist’s report • $555

This is the basic map and it also includes a report by a neurologist, who reports on the condition of the brain waves. This is available as needed.

So you say that you live at a distance.

NOT A PROBLEM ! WE MAKE ARRANGEMENTS TO COME TO YOU.

If you have 3 or more maps to be done in your area, we will send one of our staff to you to do the brain mappings and set you up with Home Training Equipment.

Just call or email our office to arrange this.

LOAN YOU THE EQUIPMENT!

It is really easy to learn and we walk you through the process several times with web cams so you get “face to face” instruction until you are comfortable with the procedure. Take a look at our Home Therapy Program link to see more on the home therapy training process. (Link to Family Home Training photos)

Nu-Brain provides the neurofeedback equipment to your family for a period of 3 to 6 months, and during this time, each family member can do from 2 to 5+ sessions a week, depending upon what they want to accomplish. With say 3 sessions a week, a family member can do 72 sessions over a period of 6 months. However, if the family member is ambitious, then 4 or 5 sessions can be done per week. At 4 sessions per week, this equals up to 96 sessions in 6 months!

The reason additional family members cost so much less in the Home Therapy Package versus the In-office Package, is because we save money on the cost of paying one of our therapists to hook you up, and we pass that savings on to you. This makes neurofeedback therapy a very accessible opportunity for every member of the family . Remember, most everyone can benefit in one way or another from neurofeedback therapy. It can help to sharpen your ability to focus, improve your memory, help you reduce anxiety, etc. So even if you don’t suffer from a more problematic neurological condition, neurofeedback therapy can still help you improve your brain’s functionality.

Now for Some Additional Suggestions:

Counseling

Nu-Brain also suggests that at times it may be important to become aware of any underlying emotional blocks that might contribute to an individual’s emotional problems. Fear, anxiety, depression, and other conditions may be caused by events of the past, whether childhood or present time circumstances, that need to be addressed.

Also, it is important for you to know that as each family member makes neurological improvement, he or she will change, and this causes the family dynamics to change as well. When this happens, family members tend to not know how to handle this new and improved version, and they may continue to “dish out” the old verbal abuse as in the past. Nu-Brain recommends that the family have Family Counseling at this stage, because the typical family “scapegoat” is no longer the scapegoat, and the other family sibling’s positions have also been changed as well. The “perfect child” is no longer the only perfect child any more, and this child may start to act up to regain their position of attention. Also, many other family dynamics will change as well. So Nu-Brain suggests that if possible, the family should schedule some sessions with a psychologist or family counselor as the family members change their behaviors and ways of being.

Tutoring

Additionally, the child who was two grade levels behind in some subjects, because they neurologically were not able to take in the information from their classes and process it, are now able to do this and gain in information. But because they have, in the past, missed some fundamental principles and knowledge, they might need to have some extra tutoring time to bring them up to the rest of the class in the basics. Nu-Brain recommends that you be aware of this, and as the neurological conditions change and improve, that you contact a tutor and have your family member work with the tutor for a short while during the basic “catch up” stage, as they are now neurologically better able to learn and catch up with the work they were not able to do before.

Nutrition

Often contributing to one’s mental and emotional stressors are the foods that are taken in. Sometimes parents may not be aware of different nutritional choices that are significant. Sometimes foods can have a negative effect on the brain’s functioning, and changing these food groups will have provide an improvement on how the brain functions, and during emotional conditions.

As you can see, Nu-Brain has put together a very outstanding program of brain mapping and neurofeedback for families, and many support programs as well. We know you will appreciate how it will help and benefit your family. So give us a call and sign up for your brain maps today.
